Ask for the assistance the problem needs
The Legal Aid Service offers consultations and representation subject to the rules for the relevant service. Explain whether you need advice, preparation of a document, attendance at a hearing or representation in an existing case. A consultation appointment does not by itself establish that a lawyer has undertaken the court work.
In a family dispute, the Service describes representation criteria including financial eligibility and the complexity and importance of the case. Have eligibility for your specific category assessed.
Separate the child’s position from the parent’s application
A child’s legal assistance and independent representation raise questions separate from a parent’s application for a publicly funded lawyer. Identify who is being represented and the basis of any appointment.
If a representative has been appointed for the child, ask what practical steps have been taken to explain the case to the child, establish their views and put their interests before the court. The child-residence guide addresses what to do when that role is inactive.
Make an urgent request usable
Give the case number, court, hearing or reply date and the work required before that date. Explain any detention, child-protection issue, language barrier or other circumstance that affects access to assistance.
Request confirmation of the assistance offered, the responsible lawyer and the next action. If an appointment has not been made, the pending procedural deadline still needs attention; do not assume the request for legal aid has extended it.
Respond to inadequate work while protecting the case
Where an appointed lawyer is unresponsive, identify the missing action and the deadline in a written request to the responsible bureau or appointing body. Seek review or replacement where appropriate and arrange urgent advice on the pending application.
Example: the hearing is next week, but the representative has not addressed a disputed agency opinion. The immediate task is to get the objection and any necessary motion considered in time. A later service or professional complaint addresses a different question.

Identify who will perform the required action before the deadline. If no appointment has been made, ask what assistance is available now and how the request will be decided.
